The Transcarpathian Regional Museum of Art named after Yosyp Bokshay is one of the centers of fine art and culture of our region. It has passed a difficult half-a-century long way of formation and development. All started in June, 1945 when some premises of the Uzhgorod castle were allocated for the selection of the former picture-gallery of the Zemstvo. The grand opening for the public was held in November, 1948. Years were passing and the selection of the museum was enriching by artworks from private selections, museums of Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kiev, Kharkov, Odessa and Lvov. The Funds needed more place. In spring of 1979 the museum moved to the historic center of Uzhgorod to the beautiful building of the former town-hall which is an architectural monument of year 1809 and a sample of classic art where it is situated nowadays. For valuable contributions to popularization of fine art in the region the museum was awarded the name of coryphaeus of the Transcarpathian painting school, People's artist of the USSR, Associate Member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR Yosyp Yosypovych Bokshay in 1990.
Today the funds of the museum run to 5 thousand of exhibits. Paintings, graphics, sculptures and pieces of decorative art are collected here. At this Web Site you can see our best exhibits.
